Unfortunate Cancellation: Richmond TAFE Open Day

Due to the recent outbreak of Equine Influenza, organisers of Richmond TAFE’s Open Day have had to cancel the event which was to be held on Saturday 15th September

Although there are no confirmed cases of the disease at the College, organisers feel it is in the best interests of the community to minimise risk by cancelling rather than postponing the event.

The College’s Horse Unit had been placed under Quarantine and there is no indication of how long the ‘lock down’ is going to last.

Their 2008 Open Day will be held at approximately the same time next year.

In the US ASA Rules On Dog DentaStix Ad

A complaint made to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) about Pedigree’s Daily DentaStix advertorial has landed the pet food producer with more positive publicity than the challenger intended.

Claiming that its Daily DentaStix ‘kept dogs teeth clean and reduced tartar’, the Pedigree magazine advertorial read:

“... Loyal and loving, your dog ought to receive the best care. And that includes looking after their oral hygiene, which is an important factor in keeping your dog healthy ... keeping your dogs teeth clean [can] prevent tooth decay and help avoid expensive dental bills ... Brushing your dogs teeth every day or giving them dental chews such as Pedigree® Daily Dentastix® will help ... Pedigree Daily Dentastix are scientifically proven to reduce tartar by up to 80 per cent when used daily. Thanks to their unique shape and texture, Dentastix keep teeth healthy and taste great ..."

The ASA investigated these claims under its regulations covering substantiation and truthfulness, and conducted tests which soon proved that the sample dogs did in fact show a reduction in tartar.

As a result, the ASA found that Pedigree were not in breach of advertising rules.

Bay rezoning needs sound science: marine experts

When it comes to the rezoning of the Moreton Bay Marine Park, University of Queensland (UQ) marine experts want less politics and scaremongering, and more scientific analysis.

There has been strong opposition to further protection of the Bay, despite less than one percent currently being protected within a green zone.

UQ ecology and mathematics Professor Hugh Possingham, a Fellow of the Australian Academy of science and member of the Park's Independent Expert Scientific Panel, said the Queensland Government needed to stick to the principles determined by the science panel.

“It is important that the areas chosen for protection are based on sound scientific principles and relevant socioeconomic data,” Professor Possingham said. “The panel has advised the Environment Minister that most of the international scientific literature points to protecting between 20-40 percent of all marine systems in no-take areas. The expert panel developed guiding principles for the review and the State Government must ensure they use these principles to rezone our Bay.”

Professor Possingham's research group designed the “Marxan” computer program which designed Great Barrier Reef Marine Park protection areas. The package is the most widely used reserve design software in the world, now used in more than 70 countries.
UQ Moreton Bay Research Station research and education manager Dr Kathy Townsend is a rezoning Stakeholder Advisory Group member and expert on many aspects of the Park. She oversees many scientific investigations about the health and diversity of Moreton Bay each year at her research labs on North Stradbroke Island.

“Stakeholders have been fully engaged by the Environmental Protection Agency [EPA] throughout the review process,” Dr Townsend said.  “However, I fear that objective science may be disregarded as pressure on the EPA and Environment Minister from interest groups increases.
“All the stakeholders despite their backgrounds, have one common goal: to maintain the health of Moreton Bay. Science cannot, and should not, play a backseat in a process as critical as this.”

PIAA Directors elections

The PIAA election of directors is here, and after many years of little interest in taking on the director’s positions, it is good to see the number of members on the ballot paper keen on directing the Pet Industry over the next two years.

The existing directors up for re-election include Anthony Ramsay, Andrew Millen, Matt McLachlan, Stuart Chamberlain, Karen De Bruin and Helen Schmidt.

The new faces are Bruce Cary, Brendan Westaway for Retail, Phil Young and Andrew Young for Distribution (Andrew was director of Retail has now changed to distribution), John Grima for Livestock, Steve Austin for boarding (a respected past President of PIAA), and Nicky Renwood for grooming.

The manufacturing division had 2 positions available and only had 2 nominations so therefore the new directors will be Bob Croucher, publisher of Pet Industry News and Vic Sawyer director of CPV.

Financial members of PIAA are entitled to vote in all categories regardless of which membership category they are in and can vote for each of the seven positions available.

Ballot papers will be due in by 4.30pm on the 4th October 2007, or at the latest, handed in to Anne Saunders at the AGM on the 5th October.

We look forward to the Pet Industry being the winner in this keen competition.

New York’s finest fashion, people and pooches

New York held its second annual Pet Fashion Week this year, featuring some little creatures jazzed up in everything from jewel-encrusted collars to pink and bronze satin capes.

More than 2000 people came to the event, including its most anticipated spectacle – an hour-long catwalk featuring pooches modeling designs from 20 pet fashion houses, accompanied by a thumping disco soundtrack.

Although dogs were the prominent models, a black cat in a golden collar also made an appearance on the runway, held by a young girl. The highlight of the show, according to The Malay Times, was a Chihuahua dressed as a Balinese dancer carried by a model wearing the same outfit, which drew a particularly ecstatic applause from the audience.

The first and fourth floors of the Manhattan exhibition centre were dedicated to exhibitors, where buyers and sellers of pet lifestyle products could find everything from bags, vitamins, leashes and special pet furniture, to perfume such as “Les Poochs VIP” which costs a phenomenal $3500 for a 120ml bottle.

As the event proved, no cost was too high in a 40 billion dollar pet-care industry which expects Americans to spend $2.7 billion on special services for their dogs and cats this year. Pets are the new children it seems, with 83 percent of pet owners in the US going by “mum” or “dad” when defining their relationship with their pet.
