A visit to Ultimate Reptile Suppliers

While we were down in Adelaide for the South Australian Pet Expo, Pet Industry News and PIAA's Vice President Bruce Carey decided to stop by Ultimate Reptile Supplies (URS) and say hello to some of the pythons, lizards, turtles and crocs (as well as a Death Adder - sorry, not for sale!).

Tim Mensforth from URS showed us around the premises, where they were barely able to contain their large supply of products and livestock. We were introduced to a number of snake hatchlings such as the Woma, Diamond and Jungle pythons, as well as some very small baby Short Neck Turtles which, fingers crossed, will soon be permitted for sale in New South Wales.

Although New South Wales currently has a number of restrictions on the importation and sale of reptiles, the Minister for Climate Change, Environment and Water, Phil Koperberg, gave the Department of Environment and Climate Change (DECC) his approval in principle of a new commercial reptile traders license. This could allow NSW retailers to catch up with the other states and sell URS livestock such as the Blue-tongued Lizard through their own stores.

Based in South Australia, URS is currently the largest professional reptile dealer in Australia. They breed their own reptiles at the site and make most of their stock, including vivariums, at their own warehouse. More information can be found at their website, http://www.ultimatereptiles.com.au/

Pet Trade Shows coming up

INDUSTRY EVENTS:

Everyone's a winner at the S.A. PET EXPO 2008

Held last Saturday in the Shores Complex, Adelaide, the South Australian PetExpo 2008 included exhibitors from around the country, from the well-known Pet Pacific to the smaller—and immensely creative—Downtown Doggy.

The trade show may not have been packed to the brim with visitors, but those who came were there to do business. Many were happy to peruse the stands, and some local retailers stayed from midday when the event opened until 9pm when exhibitors started to pack up, ready to buy up big.

The PIAA awards were handed out in the early afternoon to those lucky enough to snap up the Best New Product, Best New Aquaria Product, Best Single Trade Display and Best Multi-Booth Trade Display. Photos of the winners can be seen by clicking HERE.
