NSW EI campaign gains national stamp of approval

The Iemma Government’s equine influenza (EI) strategy has received a major stamp of approval from both the States and Territories of Australia, all of which have agreed to recognise the current EI Green Zone in NSW on equal terms with their own disease-free jurisdictions, said Primary Industries Minister Ian Macdonald.

“This means that 86 per cent of NSW is accepted nationally as disease free and movements across the border from this area of NSW will be eased from Friday 1 February,” he said.

From 1 February, the current green zone will be reclassified as white. According to Mr Macdonald, “This will really benefit horse owners living along the border in southern NSW who have had to contend with stringent border crossing restrictions even though the area has been disease free for some time.”

Requirements for horse movements within the new NSW white zone will be the same as for the current green zone. All other movements between EI zones in NSW remain unchanged.

“Until now all horses moving into Victoria from the NSW Green Zone required a permit and had to spend up to two weeks in quarantine in both states. Now all that will be required is a Travelling Horse Statement (THS) in NSW and a permit from the DPI in the destination State.”

The THS can be filled out online and downloaded from the NSW DPI website at http://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/agriculture/livestock/horse/influenza or by calling the hotline on 1800 675 888.

Mr Macdonald maintained that the state was on track to be free of EI by mid-March, at which point only a THS will be required to move a horse in NSW.

“This is good news for our horse industries, but it hinges on not one more case in the coming weeks,” he said.

“Good bio-security, reporting of suspect horses and sensible movement of animals is more crucial to the campaign than ever. There is no room for complacency; on undiagnosed sick horse could bring down the house of cards.”

VMD deems ‘add to basket’ online vet meds unacceptable

The ‘add to basket’ method of buying veterinary medicines over the Internet is not acceptable, according to the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VDM). They made the announcement last week at the 23rd Animal Health Distributors Association (AHDA) Annual Conference in Warwickshire, England, explaining to delegates that the online system involves no interaction between supplier and customer.

John Fitzgerald, Operations Director at the VDM, said that they had received numerous complaints regarding inadequate controls over the distribution of veterinary medicines over the net. He believes the sale of veterinary medicines should be consistent and comply with Veterinary Medicines Regulations to ensure that standards don’t vary depending on whether they are sold over the counter or online.

The VDM intends to release new Guidance Notes within the next few months, aimed specifically at Internet retailers of veterinary medicines. They will provide examples of good practice for operating over the internet, such as having an on-line customer registration system, direct telephone or email contact and providing the details of the Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) in charge of prescription and supply. For those who fail to comply, the VMD will have the power to seize stock without compensation and report offenders to their professional body.

Mr Fitzgerald believes that both the companies and customers could benefit if more information is provided, as it will reassure customers and give the reputable companies a commercial advantage if they highlight the skills of their SQPs. According to Fitzgerald, “most websites have no information of this nature and could be run by anyone.”

ITV animal rescue series to be fully funded by pet food company

For the first time in the UK, a pet food company is about to fund a television programme in its entirety. The reality series, Dog Rescue, will appear on the terrestrial channel ITV, and will be funded by a single advertiser, Pedigree.

The series will look at the activities surrounding two animal re-homing centres, Manchester Dogs Home and The Dogs Trust centre in Harefield, West London.

Pedigree’s move to fund Dog Rescue is in support of its Pedigree Dog Adoption Drive campaign which was officially launched in the UK on 1st January.

Although there has been some concern about product placement in TV programming, the Pedigree brand will not be advertised in the show itself but will screen at the beginning and end of commercial breaks.

Is it okay to date your dog on Valentine's Day?

- Lorna Paxton from Happytails Spa says yes

With almost 3 million Americans buying Valentine's gifts for their dogs and 30 million sharing their beds with them, clearly the differences between humans and canines are disappearing. In the past, spending Valentine's Day with your canine companion could be the choice of last resort but now, for many dog owners, it's preferable.

You find yourself alone, again, on Valentine's Day. So you turn to Plan B, your faithful, furry canine companion. If this story sounds familiar you're not alone. Over 15 million* single people own dogs in this country and it's a good bet that most of them have curled up with their dog on at least one Valentine's day.

Today, human and hound can share everything from a Valentine's Day meal for two, to spa and pampering products and even matching clothes.

"People view their dogs as extensions of their personalities," says Kevin Fisher, co-owner of happytails Canine Spa Line. "If the owner is into sports, they'll have a sporty dog. If the owner is into fashion, the dog will have a wardrobe. With someone around who likes all the same things as you do, why look any further? You've found you perfect Valentine."

So according to almost 3 million* Americans who actually buy Valentine's gifts for their dogs apparently it is perfectly acceptable to date your dog this Valentine's Day.

5. Your dog is always happy to see you, even if you look like crap

6. If your dog could speak he would say "of course I love to cuddle"

7. When you ask your dog "Do these pants make my butt look big?" he's smart enough not to tell you the truth

8. Your dog doesn't hold grudges

9. Your dog will listen to you for hours without interrupting

10. No matter what, your dog is always up for a little heavy petting
