Reptile commercial Licensing in NSW

Following the first NSW pet industry/reptile keeper’s meeting and DECC’s Native Animal Keepers Consultative Committee (NAKCC) meeting in February, a follow-up meeting was arranged by the pet industry’s representative on the NAKCC, Peter Nobbs. It was once again facilitated by Pet Pacific at their Training Centre room at Emu plains, and was held on the evening of 30th April.

Two senior government officers were invited to speak to pet industry operators in regard to the current licensing situation: Dr Miranda Gott (Coordinator of the DECC Major Programs Group) and Mr Brendon Neilly (DECC Senior Project Officer, Wildlife Management Unit). Miranda and Brendon have been talking to various stakeholders in the keeping of native animals as the whole system is under review.

47 people attended the meeting to provide feedback to the DECC that will be used in forming the departmental report, due for completion by 30th June 2008. A very wide cross-section of pet industry businesses attended, including Birdsville and Ace Colonies from Sydney; to Bob’s Birdz-N-Pets, with Darren Wood flying in from Wagga in the south; through to Hunter Pets near Maitland, north of Newcastle. Several PIAA Directors attended including the current President Mr Steve Austin.

All reports of the meeting were positive and much common ground between the pet industry and the regulator realised. The main thrust of the meeting was to talk about developing a commercial license for captive reptile trading, but the benefit of having long-standing licensed fauna dealers like Kellyville Pets, Ace Colonies and Birdsville was enormous. Many of the difficulties and issues relating to licensing were aired and it was agreed that the competency of future licensees was the biggest concern of industry and the DECC. An appropriate training plan is currently being developed by The Parramatta College with the full support of Pet Pacific Pty Ltd.

Peter Nobbs’ thoughts on the meeting were very simple - he wanted a very broad-based group of current pet industry specialist bird and animal experts to hear the thinking and planning “from the horse’s mouth”. In this way, the “Chinese whispers” and misinformation would be minimised. The DECC have said that they will attempt to have the licensing on the ground inside 1 year but there are many stakeholders that will make their views well known during the required community consultative period.

The next NAKCC meeting is set for August 2008 were this major issue will be on the agenda.

Pets banned in NT town

Residents in the remote Northern Territory town of Alyangula, on Groote Eylandt, will have to get rid of their pet birds, fish and cats before October 18 or risk being kicked out. Even dogs will have to be sacrificed if they are not neutered and don’t have written permission from the Anindilyakwa Land Council.

Groote Eylandt manganese mining company GEMCO owns a special purpose lease over the town which covers all its residents. In an open letter written by GEMCO Township Superintendent, Peter Finney reminded residents of the rules, emphasising that only two dogs were allowed per person.

“No other animals are permitted to be kept on the Eylandt,” the letter stated. If residents don’t meet the terms set by GEMCO by the 18th of October, they will be expelled from the town.

“After this period, steps will commence to remove persons not complying and compromising GEMCO’s legal obligations to the traditional land owners.”

Alyangula Senior Sergeant Lee Morgan said police would not be involved in evicting residents, but he did say that there were too many uncontrolled dogs in the town.

“They’re big dogs too – not Chihuahuas,” he said. “It’s not very comfortable.”

Doco Katrina Tails depicts hurricane rescues

A new documentary has been released, and it follows the animal rescue efforts after Hurricane Katrina devastated New Orleans. The feature-length film is titled “Katrina Tails” and it manages to give us an insight into a handful of searches for beloved pets, after 50,000 to 100,000 pets were lost in the hurricane.

The film documents some phenomenal moments, including the anguish of the firemen choosing which of the hundreds of dogs to help; the outrage at the cruel and pointless shooting by authorities of horses that were cared for daily; the self-sacrifice of a man in an attic with water up to his head who put his two dogs above him out of the water.

Producer and director Denise Richard Donnelly also managed to capture the problems that arose even after the flood had receded, when people still had to find, identify, and return the pets that remained when very few were micro-chipped, and identification was often lost.

Since the making of the film, laws have been introduced mandating that animals be part of evacuation plans.

More information can be found at www.katrinatails.com.
