QLD State Government proposes pet project

The Queensland State Government is offering $380,000 over the next two years to local councils who trial their new two-part project for compulsory registration and micro-chipping.

In an attempt to reduce the number of dogs and cats being euthanised, the State Government has asked for three local councils to volunteer for the project. They would be expected to participate by working with vets to provide discount or free de-sexing, providing registration discounts or introducing by-laws making de-sexing compulsory.

The plan was announced by Premier Anna Bligh, who said: “We want local government to be creative and explore innovative measures during the trial to find the most effective model of reducing euthanasia rates, which could be adopted by councils across the state.”

The State Government is planning to spend $75,000 on a community education program and $45,000 on implementing a code of practice for pet shops, Ms Bligh said.

Cairns council has already put up its hand for the project. Mayor Val Schier said Cairns would consider applying for the State Government’s proposal.

“We have had some preliminary discussions about cat micro-chipping already,” she said. “I think there is a really big concern in the community about the number of animals being euthanised.”

Interzoo 2008 exceeds expectations

Organisers of the Interzoo trade show have done their research, and it looks as though both visitors and exhibitors were satisfied with this year’s show, held in Nuremberg, Germany. Here are their results:

* Gaining new customers was the aim of around 86 per cent of the exhibitors, 72 per cent wanted to cultivate contacts with their customers, 72 per cent wanted to source information about products in general and 65 per cent about new products. Over half the exhibitors presented a new product at Interzoo 2008 and one third an improved product.

* 94 per cent of the exhibitors reached their most important target groups and 94 per cent of the exhibitors also made new business connections. So it is not surprising that nine of ten exhibitors assess their overall success at Interzoo 2008 favourably and 86 per cent of the companies expect follow-up business from the contacts made at the exhibition.

* 90 per cent of the exhibitors were satisfied to very satisfied with the exhibition
organisation and service. For 87 per cent of the companies, the significance of Interzoo for their marketing and sales activities is important to outstanding.

* An important criterion for exhibitor satisfaction is the high quality of the visitors. The largest groups of visitors at Interzoo 2008 included self-employed businessmen and proprietors (49 per cent), general managers (15 per cent) and department managers (15 per cent). Almost all visitors (95 per cent) are involved in procurement decisions in their company. More than three quarters of the visitors were experts from the pet supplies trade, with another five per cent from pet grooming salons.

* 60 per cent of the visitors came to Interzoo with the aim of sourcing information about new products, 47 per cent planned to cultivate business contacts, 45 per cent wanted to prepare the ground for new business contacts and 42 per cent wanted to obtain a general survey of the market. Virtually all exhibition visitors (95 per cent) were satisfied or very satisfied with the products on display at Interzoo 2008. The information and contact opportunities at the exhibition also met the expectations of 97 per cent of the visitors. 73 per cent of the visitors have already indicated they will also attend Interzoo 2010, and 22 per cent have not yet decided.

“The anniversary Interzoo created a remarkable impetus for the industry,” said Klaus Oechsner, President of the German Pet Trade & Industry Association (ZZF), the honorary sponsor of Interzoo. “Particularly the German exhibitors and visitors experienced a real sense of a new era dawning. This is very important for animal lovers, as the continued existence of the advice-intensive pet shop is essential for species-appropriate pet keeping. The pet shop is concerned with the health of a living creature and not simply with selling some kind of hobby article. Animal lovers rightly expect professional advice and quality competence from a pet shop to help them keep their animals in a natural way, and here Interzoo has constantly set new standards in the past – as in this anniversary year.”

The next Interzoo takes place in the Exhibition Centre Nuremberg from 13-16 May 2010. More info can be found at www.interzoo.com.

When you can't split pets

We’ve all heard of custody battles over houses, cars, and even children; now more and more Tasmanians are beginning to draft custody arrangements for their pets.

Tasmanian mediators have found that they have drawn up an increasing amount of “parenting plans” for pets, while animal advocates claim to have heard a growing number of pet custody cases.

According to Anne Boxhall, education officer for Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania, cases such as these were rare a few years ago, but are becoming increasingly common. Tasmanian mediators agree, but aren’t surprised by the changing trend. They believe that many couples are opting to have pets instead of children. As a result they want to ensure their pets are a part of their separation agreement.

Positive Solutions mediator Robyn Priestly believes that pet sharing is an idea that is relatively common, and is now accepted by most mediators.

“Pets are an extremely important part of the family and you can’t cut a pet in half,” she said.

INDUSTRY EVENTS:

It’s never too early! Zoomark gets ready for another huge show in ‘09

With a fresh new logo and a year to go, the bi-annual trade show Zoomark 2009 is already preparing for the big event from May 7th to 10th 2009, held in the gorgeous city of Bologna, Italy. More than 600 companies from around the world will showcase their exciting new pet food and pet care products to the Southern European market, and even with months still to go, many manufacturers and distributors have jumped at the opportunity to take part.

To assist with their new promotional campaign, Zoomark has enhanced their website – www.zoomark.it -  to include a new service for visitors, which allows them to select the exhibitors they are interested in and create special lists including their names and stand numbers; the lists can then be printed together with the show plan and used as customised show guides. The exhibitors’ area has also been improved; as well as offering exhibitors the opportunity to create their own electronic company profile, they can also use a special section devoted to the promotions they plan to propose during the show and also to download Zoomark International’s banner that can be uploaded onto their websites to stress their participation in the show.
